What We Do
CIS is a non-profit organization, which works on improving the literacy skills of students in Pre-K through the 5th grade in Southern Oklahoma. The After School Program and the Summer Day Camp are designed to create a fun and safe environment in which children flourish both academically and socially. Through these programs, CIS teachers work with students to improve their reading skills. The focus of the After School Program is to help students with homework and literacy before they go home from school. The Summer Day Camp’s focus is not only to improve their literacy skills, but to prevent summer learning loss. Our target population will be students who attend one of our area elementary schools. We also strive to increase our students’ academic engagement. Through multiple partnerships with local agencies, such as Camp Fire, Ardmore Public Library, Community Children’s Shelter and Family Service Center, and Southern Oklahoma Library System, we work together to provide our students with tools to help improve literacy, social and life skills.
With a goal of meeting a broader need in our community, in 2019 CIS began the process of becoming a DHS licensed out of school time facility. We are proud to say that we have achieved this licensing and in addition, CIS is now a 1+ STAR facility. We currently accept DHS and Tribal subsidies.
Through a partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, each student in our After School program is provided a nutritious snack before they go home. Through other partnerships and funding, we are able to provide our Summer Day Camp students with a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and a healthy afternoon snack.
All of these components help make CIS the desired and needed program it is today. We focus on literacy in order to help Pre-K through 5th grade students experience academic success. Part of this academic intervention involves a safe, nurturing environment that encourages the elementary students to learn and socialize in a place that makes them feel comfortable. CIS is constantly striving to develop stronger programs in order to serve more students.
We are focusing on growth and expanded services. We hope to expand our services and programs to other schools in the Southern Oklahoma area in the coming years.
